Från The Italian Communist Left, 1926-45.

To use an expression dear to the Italian Fraction itself, each militant reaffirmed himself within the organisation, just as the organisation reaffirmed itself in each one of its militants. If it extolled "proletarian leaders" such as Lenin, it was in order to show that these "leaders" synthesised the organic life of their party. For this reason, it tried as much as possible to give an anonymous form to those militants who were most in view. In doing so it was responding to a preoccupation of Bordiga in the 20s, who had always tried to ensure that the life of the party was based not on a passive following of its leaders, but on its political programme. (9)

It condemned the politics of "manoeuvres and expediency" which aimed at the creation of a mass party on artificial basis, "given that the relationship between the party and the masses depends essentially on the objective conditions of the situation." It condemned the system of factory cells, "negation of the centralisation of the communist parties". In an article published the same day as the platform, Bordiga emphasised that the function of these cells was to stifle any internal life and to imprison the workers in the narrow boundaries of the factory. In the name of the struggle against "intellectuals", the power of the functionaries was being reinforced. It would be worth pausing to examine the arguments of the left which most systematically criticised the policy of Bolshevisation:
  • The replacement of territorial sections by cells was the abolition of the organic life of a revolutionary party, which had to present itself "as an active collectivity with a unitary leadership." It was the negation of centralisation and the bureaucratic triumph of federalism, in which the party's body would be partitioned off into watertight cells.
  • "Bolshevisation" favoured particularism and individualism. The party became a sum of individual workers, attached to their professional branch. The consequebce if this was corporatism and workerism, breaking the organic unity of the collectivity of the party, which must go beyond all professional categories.
  • Instead of limiting the role of "intellectuals" in the party, the system of cells hade the opposite effect:
"The worker, in the cell, will have a tendency to discuss only particular economic questions of interest to the workers in his enterprise. The intellectual will continue to intervene in it, not thanks to the strenght of his eloquence, but more thanks to the monopoly of authority granted to him by the party centre, to 'settle' whatever question comes up."
Furthermore, the "proletarianisation" of the party leadership, a goal proclaimed by the "Bolsheviks", was so little a reality that the new leadership, in contrast to the old one, did not have one worker on the Executive.
  • Having leaders with a working class origin was no guarantee of the proletarian character of the party, because "leaders from a working class extraction have shown themselves to be at least as capable as the intellectuals of opportunism and treason and, in general, more susceptible to being absorbed by bourgeois influences." (24-25)

In its critique of the Comintern it rejected the concept of "democratic centralism", which it saw as one of the causes of the exclusion of revolutionary elements, through the free play of the vote. It stood instead for "organic centralism", which had to flow from the party's programme, and not from an electoral mechanism. It did not however deny, that divergences about the programme could arise; this would necessarily be expressed in the form of fractions, whose existence would also be something organic rather than being based on a "right" recognized by the party. They would be reabsorbed through the victory of that fraction which defended the revolutionary programme. (126)

Vad kan man skriva in i stadgarna?

The party does not start from as complete an identity of economic interests as does the union. On the contrary it bases the unity of its organization not on category, like the union, but on the much broader basis of the entire class. This is true not only in space, since the party strives to become international, but also in time, since it is the specific organ whose consciousness and action reflect the requirements of victory throughout the process of the proletariat's revolutionary emancipation. When we study the problems of party structure and internal organization, these well-known considerations force us to keep in mind the whole process of its formation and life in relation to the complex tasks which it continually has to carry out. At the end of this already long exposition, we cannot enter into details of the mechanism which should regulate consultation of the party's mass membership, their recruitment and the designation of responsible officers. There is no doubt that for the moment there is nothing better to do than hold to the majority principle. But as we have emphasized, there is no reason to raise use of the democratic mechanism to a principle. Besides its consultative functions, analogous to the legislative tasks of the state apparatus, the party has executive tasks which at the crucial moment of the struggle, correspond to those of an army and which demand maximum discipline toward the hierarchy. In fact, in the complex process which has led to the formation of communist parties, the emergence of a hierarchy is a real and dialectical phenomenon which has remote origins and which corresponds to the entire past experience of the functioning of the party's mechanism. We cannot state that the decisions of the party majority are per se as correct as those of the infallible supernatural judges who are supposed to have given human societies their leaders, like the gods believed in by all those who think that the Holy Spirit participates in papal conclaves. Even in an organization like the party where the broad composition is a result of selection through spontaneous voluntary membership and control of recruitment, the decision of the majority is not intrinsically the best. If k contributes to a better working of the party's executive bodies, this is only because of the coincidence of individual efforts in a unitary and well-oriented work. We will not propose at this time replacing this mechanism by another and we will not examine in detail what such a new system might be. But we can envisage a mode of organization which will be increasingly liberated from the conventions of the democratic principle, and it will not be necessary to reject it out of unjustified fears if one day it can be shown that other methods of decision, of choice, of resolution of problems are more consistent with the real demands of the party's development and its activity in the framework of history.
The democratic criterion has been for us so far a material and incidental factor in the construction of our internal organization and the formulation of our party statutes; it is not an indispensable platform for them. Therefore we will not raise the organizational formula known as "democratic centralism" to the level of a principle. Democracy cannot be a principle for us. Centralism is indisputably one, since the essential characteristics of party organization must be unity of structure and action. The term centralism is sufficient to express the continuity of party structure in space; in order to introduce the essential idea of continuity in time, the historical continuity of the struggle which, surmounting successive obstacles, always advances towards the same goal, and in order to combine these two essential ideas of unity in the same formula, we would propose that the communist party base its organization on "organic centralism". While preserving as much of the incidental democratic mechanism that can be used, we will eliminate the use of the term "democracy", which is dear to the worst demagogues but tainted with irony for the exploited, oppressed and cheated, abandoning it to the exclusive usage of the bourgeoisie and the champions of liberalism in their diverse guises and sometimes extremist poses.

Från Communist organisation and discipline, av Amadeo Bordiga.

But if we are thus liberated from any egalitarian and democratic prejudice, that still should not lead us to base our action on a new or different prejudice which is the formal and metaphysical negation of the former. In this sense, we make reference to what written in the first part of the article on the national question (Prometeo no. 4) on how to face the great problems of communism.
The expression used in the texts of the International, «democratic centralism», indicates sufficiently that the practice and rules of Communist parties are somehow at a half way house between absolute centralism and absolute democracy, and comrade Trotsky has drawn attention to this in a letter which has given rise to large debates amongst the Russian comrades.
Let us however say straightaway that if we are not able to seek a solution for revolutionary problems by appealing to the traditional abstract principles of Liberty or Authority, we do not find it any more expedient to look for a solution in a mixture of the two, as if they were fundamental ingredients to be combined.
For us, the communist position on the question of organisation and discipline should be more complete, satisfactory and original. To define it briefly, we have for a long time preferred the expression «organic centralism», thus indicating that we are against any autonomist federalism, and that we accept the term centralism for its meaning of synthesis and unity, as opposed to the almost random and «liberal» association of forces arisen from the most varied independent initiatives. As concerns a more thorough development of the above conclusion, we believe it can be derived, far better than from the continuation of this study of which we are giving here a mere preliminary outline, from texts that are likely to be discussed in the fifth world Communist Congress. In part, the problem is also dealt with in the theses on tactics for the fourth Congress.

Från Lyonteserna, av Amadeo Bordiga.

The solution doesn’t reside in a useless increase in hierarchical authoritarianism, whose initial investiture is lacking both because of the incompleteness of the historical experiences in Russia, impressive though they are, and because even within the Old Guard, the custodian of the Bolshevik traditions, disagreements have been resolved in ways which cannot be considered as a priori the best ones. But neither does the solution lie in the systematic application of the principles of formal democracy, which for marxism have no other function than as organisational practices which can be occasionally convenient.
The communist parties must achieve an organic centralism which, whilst including maximum possible consultation with the base, ensures a spontaneous elimination of any grouping which aims to differentiate itself. This cannot be achieved with, as Lenin put it, the formal and mechanical prescriptions of a hierarchy, but through correct revolutionary politics.
The repression of fractionism isn’t a fundamental aspect of the evolution of the party, though preventing it is.
To claim that the party and the International are mysteriously ensured against a relapse, or the tendency to relapse, into opportunism is not only fruitless and absurd but extremely dangerous, because such a relapse could indeed occur either due to changing circumstances, or to the playing out of residual social-democratic traditions. We have to admit that every differentiation of opinion not reducible to cases of conscience, or personal defeatism, may develop a useful function in the resolution of our problems and protect the party, and the proletariat in general, from grave dangers.
If such dangers become accentuated then differentiation will inevitably, but usefully, take on the fractionist form, and this might lead to schisms. However this won’t happen because of childish reasons, because the leaders haven’t put enough energy into repressing everybody, but only given the terrible hypothesis of a failure of the party and its becoming subservient to counter-revolutionary influences.

Från Lessons of the counterrevolutions (1953), av Amadeo Bordiga.

The position of the Left consists in the simultaneous struggle against the following deviations:
a) The rank and file of the party is qualified to decide on the action of the center if it is democratically consulted (workerism, laborism, social democratism);
b) The supreme center (political committee or party leader) is qualified to decide the action of the party and the masses (Stalinism, the practice of the Comintern) with the right to discover “new forms” and “new courses”.
Both deviations lead to the same result: the rank and file is no longer the proletarian class, but the people or the nation, which are always oriented in the direction of the interests of the ruling bourgeois class, as Marx, Engels and Lenin have correctly affirmed.

Given that the party is the prefiguration of communist society, it cannot adopt a mechanism, a life principle, an organization, linked to bourgeois society. It has to realize the destruction of this society.
1. Refusal of the democratic mechanism. Our position is: organic centralism.
2. Anti-individualism. The party realizes the anticipation of the social brain. All knowledge is mediated by the party as is all action. The militant does not have to seek the truth; this is afforded him by the party (truth in the social domain, in other fields one can come to it after the revolution and only then). Tendency to realize social man.
3. Refusal of any form of mercantilism and careerism. The relationship between comrades, their manifestation, must be inspired by the comments by Marx on James Mill's book: all activity, all manifestation, must be the affirmation of human joy by communication with the other and, hero, with future society.
4. Abolition to social antagonisms linked to classes. There are only communist militants in the party. Practically this means the unity of the party around place of living and not place of work.
5. The party has to be the dissolution of the enigmas and must know itself to be so. It must present itself as the harbour for the proletarian, the place he affirms his human nature so that he is able to mobilise all his strength against the class enemy.
One must specify these characteristics because they make clearer the party's function; they allow one to have an integral view of it. The party is this impersonal force above generations, it represents the human species, the human existence which has finally been found. It is the consciousness of the species. It can only manifest itself under certain conditions. In a revolutionary situation there can be the overturning of praxis which is the overthrow of all past and present human development. The party decides to seize power. The destruction of bourgeois society ends human prehistory. Then everything converges. It is the culminating point of the theory by the exact prediction of the favourable moment for action (insurrection is an art). The two phenomena are summed up, it is the consciousness of action which appeared, consciousness before action.

Från Considerations on the party’s organic activity when the general situation is historically unfavourable, av Amadeo Bordiga.

8. Being the opposite of the social complex concentrated on falsification and destruction of theory and sound doctrine, it is evident that today’s small party has, as an outstanding character, the duty of restoring the principles of doctrinal value; but it is unfortunately deprived of the favourable setting that saw Lenin achieving such a work after the disaster of the First World War. But it does not imply that we have to erect a barrier between theory and practical action; because beyond a given limit we would destroy ourselves and all our basic principles. We thus claim all forms of activity peculiar to the favourable periods, insofar as the real force relations render it possible .
9. All this should be treated much more broadly, but it is still possible to achieve a conclusion about the party’s organisational structure in such a difficult transition. It would be a fatal error to consider the party as dividable into two groups, one of which is dedicated to the study and the other to action; such a distinction is deadly for the body of the party, as well as for the individual militant. The meaning of unitarism and of organic centralism is that the party develops inside itself the organs suited to the various functions, which we call propaganda, proselytism, proletarian organisation, union work, etc., up to tomorrow, the armed organisation; but nothing can be inferred from the number of comrades destined for such functions, as on principle no comrade must be left out of any of them.
The fact that in this phase the comrades devoted to theory and to the movement’s history may seem too many, and too few those yet ready to action, is a historical accident. But above all it would be senseless to carry out an investigation into the number of those devoted to the one and to the other display of energy. We all know that, when the situation radicalises, countless elements will side with us, in an immediate, instinctive way, and without the least training course aping scholastic qualifications.

Från Who we are, av n+1.

Our aim is to reach those who are fed up with the ‘marxist’ con-formism, loathe clichés and 'communist' liturgy, and feel communism as something real.
Our activity is based on frequent meetings, and on drawing generalizations from the results of different partial works. Our method is to link specific topics together, then relating them to the whole (Marx: "I haven’t discovered anything, I’ve only used a new method to link up what others have already discovered").
Our work excludes any exchange of personal opinions on the theoretical heritage. Today’s greatest socialization of production springs from social intelligence, and the globalization of human relations itself contributes to the development of a global brain. A step back to ancient organizing conceptions, typical of the tribal or parcel mode of production, would be foolish (even if involving a small number of people).
A close link between personal contributions and a general plan has always characterized the work of the Left (and consequently our own work). On the other hand, such an interconnection marked out also the highly socialized production in factories. The difference is that in our work, any individual contribution is not alienated, but connected with the global structure of the theory to which the empirical data, coming from the dynamics of communication, are submitted. This excludes any debate on opposing theses, which always leads to conflicts that would need democratic procedures to be tackled.
We do not deny the existence of differences among people. Equality is a vague concept, still related to religion or to law. In this society it is not only a useful hypocrisy: in fact, the equality of individuals as commodities is materially based on the equality of the exchange values on the market. For this reason, in spite of the wide social differences, anyone is involved in the equalitarian ideology, through democratic institutions.
We oppose the concept of organicity to the one of equality. The cells of a living organism are differentiated and take part in the whole process. An organic whole always improves the efficiency of its differentiated parts, because only in this way any individual cell can give the best of its potentialities to the general organism (as Marx stated in his notes of 1843).
Organicity excludes organizing formalisms, when not essential. Today every social productive activity is centralized, planned, correlated; in short, it is in keeping with the technical standard reached by the ultramature capitalism. Socialized technique and work are natural part of mankind, and appeared in history since the highly organized ancient communities. Therefore, discipline and centralism do not come from a moral or statutory rule, but are the practical result of the organic relation between individuals as a whole and their aims.
The Communist Left asserted that revolutionary militants "might aim to create a fiercely anti-bourgeois setting, which largely anticipates the main features of the communist society", and defined the party as "the projection of tomorrow’s Man-Society into today’s reality". The Communist Party of Italy (section of the Communist International from 1921) had neither secretaries nor headquarters. Five people were enough to coordinate all the party’s activities: in fact, the militants’ network was perfectly adherent to the revolutionary programme and was consequently able of self-organization (just like a living body).
Our project is therefore based on a historical real experience, not on personal ideas, and our subsequent analysis (not comparable with a mere work of preservation) is the result of a dynamic of struggling forces. We think that only such a project can give rise to a structure which largely anticipates tomorrow’s party and society.
